Directions on How to Build a Fence
As with any do it yourself project, planning and a good set of plans is key, no matter what size project you are tackling. Some may think that they don't need directions on how to build a fence, how hard could it be. Well, it isn't hard, but having a set of plans will give you a material list, cut sheets and step by step instructions. You will save yourself a lot of frustration, but more importantly, you will save yourself time and money.
By having good directions on how to build a fence, you will be able to calculate a budget for your project. Without a plan, you could end up not having enough material and have to make numerous trips back to the lumber yard or you may end up with more material than you need. Either way, it will end up costing you more money than necessary.
Before you begin installing your fence, check with your local city to see if you need a building permit. You don't want to start your fence only to have the city come by and stop your construction and possibly fine you. And if you are a member of a homeowners association you will need to request permission from the association as well. Homeowner associations will usually have certain restrictions that you will need to conform to.
If you live in an area where it freezes in the winter, it is important to find out where the frost line is. You will need to dig your holes well below the frost line so that when the ground freezes, it won't up-heave your posts. In addition to the depth of the holes, it is very important that you align all the your posts perfectly straight with each other or you will end up with a crooked fence. Take the extra time to make sure everything is straight and measured evenly, it's definitely worth the extra time.
When you are ready to begin, start with your end posts. Once they are set up, you can then stretch a string from one end post to another creating a perfect line between each post. Next you will need to drive a stake every 6 to 8 feet along this line (check your plans to see the exact distance needed), between the end posts. Make sure you double check your measurements because you want your posts to be equally spaced.
Now you can align the posts with the string, make sure they are level vertically, and then brace them while the cement sets up. It normally takes 2-3 days for the cement to cure enough for you to be able to start adding the actual fencing material. It is better to use screws instead of nails when you are installing your fencing. Screws will be more secure while nails could possibly work themselves loose.
The last step is to paint or seal your fence, depending on the affect you want. Either way, make sure you use a good quality material and that the fencing is properly prepared.
By having good directions on how to build a fence, you will end up with a professional looking fence at a fraction of what it would cost you to hire a professional to install your fence for you.

I am the wife of a "Handy Man" and sometimes even his helper. We have saved so much money over the years because he was able to "fix it or build it" himself.
Being a handy man doesn't come naturally for everyone, but you can still tackle some of these projects if you have a good set of plans and detailed instructions.
